Streamside Management Zones (SMZs) are areas maintained on each side of perennial and intermittent streams. While SMZs provide many benefits, their primary purpose is to provide a relaivly undisturbed zone of forested buffer to filter sediments from adjacent forest operations, maintain streambank stability, and provide shade to maintain cooler water temperatures. The minimum SMZ width on each side of a perennial stream and on each side and above the head of an intermittent stream should be 50 feet.
